Playing with the Wii

There will be exactly two Wii related jokes in this commentry due to coersion. Because really haven't we had enough?

So S has been given a Wii for Christmas and managed to convince the gift giver that she could bring it to ours yesterday to let us try it out. The console itself is a small white box that look rather unassuming for what it is and comes with a long thin black thing that you have to balance on top of the tv screen. This is apparently the motion sensor to pick up your movement from side to side. The remote is well remote shaped and gives me strange images of children getting confused and thinking all tv remotes can be wielded in comic fun.
The buttons on it are however well placed for use and I did feel a little extra geeky when my brain started thinking of it as a Star Trek phaser thus setting me up for wishing for a shooting game all night.

So aiming our phaser to the screen we started by designing our wiimii's with surprisingly recognisable results for a wierd Japanese chibi thing. Then we started our entrance into the world of Wii sports. The first game we tried was Golf. Now I am hopeless at golf normally and did not think I would have much luck with it now either. I kept being told off for not doing the proper golf hand grip on the controller as I did my shots. Mind you I still won...Very flukey that.
Next up K tried Tennis which looked a bit like watching a train wreck in slow motion as she had no idea how to hit anything so the console played a lovely game by itself. She still won though.
We then proceeded to Bowling. Now the controller is so sensitive that the style of bowling most of us have when bowling for real actually carried over to the game. Though it suddenly got a lot easier to do trick shots. Now I get picked on for generally winning every time we go bowling (not my fault I swear) and on the Wii I not only won I got a huge score in comparison to what I normally get.
So having done that I decided to try my hand at baseball. Oh what a disaster that was...all the balls I hit were foul balls and that wasn't very many. I had slightly more luck pitching but only slightly.
Boxing was fun though my damn opponent kept getting up again. It was the one game that used the nunchuck as well so that you could move both hands independantly.

There is a section for calculating your Wii age depending on how well you do in a few tasks (Tennis, Precision Bowling and Baseball). S had apparently tried it before and got 80ish years. K tried it and ended up with 76. So I thought may as well give it a go too. Having done my best effort (and working out how to play tennis, which kind of helped) the program displayed 72 in large letters. We all looked at it stunned as I had done quite well (all that bowling practice ;) ). A few moments later the 72 fell off the screen to be replaced by 54 *Bounce* Go me. OK the reason I feel smug here is mainly due to the fact that IRL both K and S are obviously sportier than me. I think the way this controller works suits me down to the ground. But seriously I have huge cravings for a shooting game to test my phaser skills on...

Things to remember for next time that we play the Wii.

1. When they say you need space you kind of do. It is possible to do some armchair gaming but it is much more satisfying and occasionally easier if you can bounce around.
2. Extra controllers would be fun for some of the games but you can get away with only having one for most Wii sports.
3. You will have some sort of ache the day after. Playing with your Wii is all in the wrist action...and shoulder action and well you get the idea.

Wii related injuries so far: 1 (Bash on the nose by other player as did not move out of way fast enough, completely my own fault :P )

Quote of the evening: This is poo! (S getting frustrated at the game), no this is Wii (K's response) And I believe that fills my quota of actual intentional jokes.
