Business Trip Day 1 (I got to borrow a machine, so this is from yesterday)
It's odd the feelings you have waiting for a trip, which you have not organised youself. Mostly I just felt nervous. Like
midnightoak I am a nervous traveller much more settled once I'm on the way and can no longer influence the possibility of forgetting something.
Taxi showed up on time and delivered me to the airport with no fuss whatsoever. I then quickly checked in for my klm flight (after the self service machine ignored my passport). I was then promptly shown the first benefit of business class, the fast lane or as the sign proclaimed "by invitation only". Lucky Me...
Ten minutes later I was at the door to the executive lounge. The apparent 17 pound fee to use it quickly quashed my enthusiasm to check it out. Boarding was again quick as we got to go first. I got a feeling some people thought I had been upgraded though. Well never judge by appearences.
It should be said that you know watching Lost is messing with your mind when you judge your seat position by which part of the island you would have ended up on. If I remember correctly, I'd have ended up in the section with the pilot. Not at all a good prospect :D Randomly the first question the woman behind me asked her collegue was "Have you seen Lost?"
The air stewardess took our coats, which saved me having it on my lap. They then started their announcements in Dutch. As a speaker of several languages of differing backgrounds, listening to Dutch is rather fascinating and also slightly frustrating. Every word sounds familiar and you get the feeling that if you just concentrate hard enough you'd understand it all.
Now I've never been afraid of flying but I've started to find the initial takeoff a little nerve wracking and the type of turbulance that makes you drop your stomach is not fun. Now there are days when I am forever grateful for my sensitive balance. In the air is not one of them. It's amazing how vertigo hits when I lean forward on a plane. The landing was hell.
Food was served almost immediately that the fasten seat belt sign went out. Not surprising considering the flight was only 52 mins long. The meal was a light salad with a slice of meat, a bread roll and a chocolate cheesecake. It occured to me that you don't get any choice what you wear as an air hostess, but that the wierd apron thing they put on is great for carrying lots of cans of beer.
My luggage was almost waiting for me when I got to the baggage belt. The shuttle bus to the hotel wasn't quite as prompt. Now anyone who's been to spagetti junction will know it's got roads in all directions. However I've never seen road planning that seemed as much like someone scribbled a doodle of spagetti on a page and then attempted to make traffic work. I was impressed by the driver's ability to not get lost. Even my good sense of space and direction was getting confused as to where I was in relation to where I had started from.
The hotel was, well, luxury compared to all the places I've stayed before. I'm also in the executive wing. I've taken photos of the swishness and have been writing this while watching Dutch tele. Mostly an episode of series 5 CSI and randomly the first Harry Potter with lovely subtitles.
Roll on Day two
PS Now watching crimewatch as I prepare to fall asleep...
