Maelstrom Food and Events Not F.O.I.P¹

So it's the second day after Maelstrom and I am now suitably awake enough to write down what I enjoyed about my event.

Before the event I purchased a Muurikka Skillet² for use with [livejournal.com profile] midnightoak's firepit. I had never used one but was assured by the seller that it was just like cooking using a frying pan and that even with a small fire the shape of it meant that the heat was well distributed.

I also found a charcoal guy who is fairly local to me in Bodfari(near St Asaph) who makes charcoal that barely smoke (just during the lighting process as it gets going), is fast heating (I can cook almost immediately after lighting) and is from local wood (so no importing wood which is not as good or from managed forests). You can message me and I can give you his details. They do a big bag that will last a long time, I've cooked a whole weekend and barely used a quarter of the bag.

You'd think that was good enough but no. Bromsgrove was having a farmers' market so [livejournal.com profile] lucian_albrecht and I went down there to get the food for the Saturday. I went in almost full kit but minus face makeup. The butcher asked if I had been down a coal mine while someone else asked if I was planning on fighting.

The menu for the weekend went something like this. Seasoning is your friend as it stops food tasting the same all the time.

Friday night. We had intended to make stew but unfortunately the stew pot had been forgotten. No worries, skillet to the rescue. So with a splayed chicken and veg I made dinner.

Saturday. Breakfast was pancakes, and bacon(farmers market and sooo very good) and eggs.

Lunch. Was meant to be skewers of pork tenderloin(farmers market) but the skewers annoyed me so I just dumped it directly on the grill.

Dinner. Rosemary Lamb rumpsteak with veg(Farmer's market again). Such tender lamb it was divine.

Sunday. Eggs for breakfast and baked potatoes for lunch. Something that wasn't quite as successful as we forgot the foil.

The fun part for me was my insistance that this was just simple warrior's fare and we could do much better with a full kitchen. Some photos of the food exist on [livejournal.com profile] midnightoak's flickr.

I sparred with my mask for the first time and was surprisingly good enough to hold my own against my sparring partner, practise that came in handy later but that's Foip. I found an armourer who enthused like mad about my beak armour and my hands and was all enthusiastic about the idea of making a helmet for avian battle or a beak tip. He was impressed with how obviously build for battle I was compared to other avians.

¹ Find Out In Play, for those not used to Larp speak. Is used for everything that we think you need to work at to find. Randomly I have also started using this to refer to my normal RPG character info.

² You will have to scroll down past the reindeer skin to see it.

That's spatchcocked chicken...

But it was all ace! Big thanks from me, although the excellent food means I didn't get to have a Bambi-In-A-Bun from the King's Banquet people.

Perhaps next time we can arrange Bambi meat of our own.

That would be very ace. :D I must admit I did enjoy it very much.

I think, without a fridge, it's hard to have things like fresh mean on the Sunday evening / Monday morning of the Easter event, at least without leaving the site. Perhaps a solar-powered 12VDC module is what we need. ;)

The fun part was that because I made all the food, I also managed to fit it all into my slimming regime with minimal effort. So not only is it good food it's healthy, slimming food. That is the whole reason I said I would cook, well that and avoiding washing up. ;)

are we supposed to be discouraging your :D
We had so much food left over (snacky things) that I am having to take it into work and give it to the medievalists and vultures ;)
