Nearing The End of a Mini Era
Oct. 13th, 2006 09:43 amIt's been a bit of a sad time in the shazrasha household lately as the venerable hamster Dusty is beginning to feel the effects of his age.
He is now a full two and a half years old (roughly), which apparently is quite good for a hamster (they usually live between 2-3 years though the odd one gets to live longer).
Old age can start in hamsters as 'young' as one year old, Dusty really only started to show his age recently, loosing weight (due to not eating much) and slowing down. It was heart breaking to pick him up and feel his skeleton so much more than we used to. He is still a very fiesty fellow and curious about everything, but he is having trouble with the tubes in his space station.
So yesterday, as K cleaned out the station she changed it to be all in one level. Dusty has moved into old hamster accomodation. We are also monitoring his health. If there is no improvement a trip to the vet may be in order.
