I finished HP 7 on Saturday and I will tell no one my comments unless asked.

[livejournal.com profile] choccoweeble shouted out the inevitable "I win, haha" followed by "the Dance of Joy" (tm) around 7.30ish.

However I don't mind too much I feel slightly vindicated by the fact that I was only 36 pages from the end at that point.

The evening was nice with friends round and the question was asked "which character do you like best?"

I really wasn't certain, I knew that I really didn't like Harry (I don't care if evertone else does he just annoys me) but not who was my favourite. I did eventually go with Luna Lovegood as her personal brand of insane is great to me. This was further enforced when we went to watch HP5 on Sunday. Yes, Harry is as annoying in the film as in the book ([livejournal.com profile] choccoweeble happily stating that she did still want to slap him) but at least you have to sit through much less of him being annoyed so it's bearable.
Anyway to Luna, the film really did cement her as my favourite closely followed by Tonks. I seem to like the quirky ones best. ;)

Snape is my favourite character having now reread the entire series and the final book. When I went back to reread, I was amazed at how many times he acted in a way that seemed awful, but really wasn't at all. I love the Luna character though, she is amazing, and excellently portrayed in the recent movie.

Did you know that American film critics thought the Luna character acting was poor? I can't remember the exact details, but what they criticized the actress for was the staple of the character. It was clear they didn't read the book, because they would have known she was supposed to to be way out in space loony. Just further cements why I don't listen to art critics.

Snape's character is cool but I just didn't take fully to him. I never doubted Dumbledore's trust in him though.

Critics are so often very very mistaken about things. I thought the actress made Luna exactly like I imagined her to be, even though the scottish accent was a bit of a surprise. Way out in space loony is a good description of her.

She shouldn't really have a Scottish accent, she's from Devon, but I think it's forgivable.

Well, when you think about it, most of the main characters are from down south and I feel this is very unrepresentative. I mean, you've got Harry in Surrey, masses of them around the Ottery St Catchpole (can't spell and I'm doing it phonetically as I've been listening to the audio versions way too much) area, and when she listed the notable magic villages, they all seemed southern to :P

Neville's surname is Longbottom. He is almost certainly from Yorkshire or Lancashire.

Someone did a pretty thorough analysis of Harry's year group's demographics here.

Also, Spinner's End written like it's in the post-industrial North somewhere.

That is true, but surnames aren't always certain (I don't know anyone with the name Longbottom, but I assume its more common a little further south :P ) - particularly when people move about so much these days. Even with the class list analysis, which was fascinating by the way :), most of the *major* characters do seem southern - Ron, Hermione and Harry are all from the south, as is Dumbledore. This is probably just due to who I see as main characters, e.g. Luna (Devon) or Tonks (her parents didn't seem that far from Harry's home). True, the year was nicely representative, but the notables were not :P

Well, Harry, Luna, The Weasleys, Dumbledore and the Diggorys are all from Devon and the West Country, technically, which isn't really the South in the sense of "London and surroundings", but your point is valid.

Hermione isn't from anywhere specific in-canon, IIRC, although I do tend to think she's from somewhere in the Home Counties, possibly the southern Midlands.

"when she listed the notable magic villages, they all seemed southern too"

well, except for Hogsmeade, which is in Scotland ;)

**SPOILERS PRESENT**

Tonks and Lupin, and Luna were my favourite characters - I was not pleased with the HP7 "massacre"

As to the last book - what did you think of the last chapter? I was kind of pleased she let us know they were all getting on fine, but only the bits I could have predicted anyway were really revealed. I think I would have preferred a more detailed finish - who ended up as headteacher? after all that careers talk going on pages and pages over two books, what did they all end up doing? (aside from Neville and he was probably the most obvious after Harry's clearly stated ambition)

I was rather put out with the massacre myself. Partially as unlike some of the others you actually get no warning about that particular bit. It's not in view that they die.

I personnally wasn't fond of the 19 years later bit. It was very bare and held no info that I thought was of interest except maybe the names of the kids (just to see who they had honoured).
Apparently though there is talk of an almanac, encyclopedia type thing that would give us the missing details for everyone. We'll just have to see.
